Biochar production processes as well as its various applications provide numerous benefits to both environment and economy (Lehmann et al., 2006; Basu, 2010). However, understanding the physicochemical structure of this valuable product has to be improved in order to be able to obtain the aforementioned benefits and to avoid environmental costs. Abstract The multilayer adsorption of a metal on a (110) bcc substrate has been studied by a grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulation in continuous, three-dimensional space. The obtained values of the critical parameters are compared with the results of a similar 2D Monte Carlo calculation and are interpreted in the spirit of the theory of Asada. A sharp transition from monolayer to multilayer adsorption is observed. The transition is accompanied by a substantial structural rearrangement in the adlayers immediately at the substrate. Experimental and robust modeling approach for lead(II) uptake by alginate gel beads: influence of the ionic strength and medium composition.

Abstract Systematic kinetic and equilibrium studies on the lead ions removal ability by Ca-alginate gel beads have been performed by varying several internal parameters, namely, number of gel beads, nature and composition of the ionic medium and pH, which allowed us to model a wastewater in order to closely reproduce the composition of a real sample. Moreover, the effects brought about the different ionic species present in the reacting medium have been evaluated.
